LMMS is short for Linux Multimedia Studio. Don’t let the Linux part throw you off. Linux is just one of several supported operating systems. No matter the operating system, one thing remains unchanged: LMMS can be used for music production purposes – mix sounds, arrange samples, create beats, and so on.

As mentioned above, Linux is just one of several supported operating systems. You see, LMMS is a cross-platform application. It is available for Windows (32 and 64-bit flavors), Ubuntu, KXStudio/Ubuntu, openSUSE, and Pardus 2008. Getting back to Windows, it must be said that a simple setup wizard will help you quickly install LMMS on your Windows-powered PC.

The first time you launch LMMS you will be presented with the Settings menu. After you go through the Settings and set things up as you see fit, you will be presented with the LMMS interface. Mind you, some of the settings will be applied only after you restart the application. The LMMS interface is dark-themed, quite good looking, and quite easy to use.

To address your music production needs, LMMS puts several handy features at your disposal: editor to help you compose songs; editor to create beats and basslines; Piano-Roll to edit patterns and melodies; FX mixer; numerous instrument and effect plugins; user-defined track-based automation and computer-controlled automation sources; support for MIDI; and more. Since LMMS is free software released under a GNU General Public License (GPL), you have all the time in the world to uncover everything it can do.

LMMS is a free and very useful tool that you can use for music production purposes.
